A SON'S VIEW OF HIS FATHER'S INCREDIBLE LIFE - LES PAUL
LPR World Digital Magazine
Who was Les Paul? A man on a journey, to say the least. This part of my Dad's tribute website features some of the stories that give you a look into the man I knew.
As far back as I can remember, Dad was always an inquisitive person. He would say, "It's called curiosity, and I got a double dose of it." As far as influences go, the two most significant people in his life were his mother, Evelyn, but without a doubt, the guitarist Django Reinhardt came in second. Dad's mom never held back from giving Les advice. This time, it led to his "New Sound" and the development of his Sound on Sound technique, a whole new way of recording. The new process led him to many hit songs, including "How High the Moon," which took 24 overdubs to produce and an hour and a half to record. In LPR World Magazine, you will find the inside story Dad shared with me of how this iconic hit song was made.
.It was 1959 when my Dad told me the whole story, from the birth of an idea to finally convincing Gibson to build the instrument that would shape the course of music history: the first approved Gibson Goldtop Les Paul Guitar. And where did the next generation take what Les left them? From Les and his era to the guitar wizards of today, read about who is using the instrument, that blends the generations together and keeps the legend alive.
To borrow a phrase, "I can assure you that the people in this industry don't go through a day in their life without being touched by something my Dad did, said, played or invented."
